Apple Clipboard Request From Microsoft
Apple's interoperability page for EU developers now lists a plan that lets extensions share and import iPhone pasteboard items with paired accessories. Microsoft submitted the request on Mar. 25, saying it could not match Universal Clipboard, the tool that already moves text between Macs, iPhones and iPads. Apple answered on Apr. 27, saying an initial assessment had moved the ask into the next phase of its process.
On Jun. 26 the company confirmed it would proceed, outlining a system that alerts a developer extension whenever someone copies content, then passes that content to a paired device. That design borrows from the Accessory Notifications and Accessory Live Activities frameworks that arrived with iOS 26.5 for third-party accessories.
Microsoft must also adopt AccessorySetupKit, the framework that forces a separate one-time consent for every paired Windows PC. Today an iPhone app can read the clipboard only while it runs in the foreground, and users approve each copy action. Microsoft called that restriction a barrier to continuous background syncing between an iPhone and a PC or other connected device.

Why Windows Clipboard Sync Matters
Microsoft argued that cross-device copy and paste is a foundational productivity habit, and said it does not intend to replicate Apple's system experience. The company asked for clipboard sync that behaves as a lightweight, continuous capability rather than a manual, app-driven operation that users must trigger by hand.
Android owners have relied on that convenience for years through Microsoft's Phone Link app and the SwiftKey keyboard, which both sync clipboards. Apple described the clipboard work as a significant engineering effort and set fall 2027 for completion, with a developer beta to follow. The timeline points to iOS 28, though Apple has not confirmed which software version will carry the feature.
Apple DMA Compliance Record
Apple has opened pieces of iOS over the past two years to satisfy Digital Markets Act rules, and its response has varied by feature. eSIM transfers to Android phones and simpler data migration tools reached users in every market, not just Europe.
Other concessions stopped at the bloc's border, including AirPods-style pairing and notification forwarding for third-party wearables.
Meta objected in July to the same consent framework Microsoft must now use for its own pairing request. Apple has also cautioned that some requests may prove unfeasible or inappropriate if a solution would compromise the integrity of the operating system.
